On an average basis, more than 160,000 new cases of COVID-19 are being reported every day. That's up from 100,000 a month ago. In total, more than 10 million people have been infected and over 500,000 have died. But at the same time, the race for a vaccine is intensifying as doctors learn more about the longer term impact of the virus on the body.
